Woman sues theater after husband's death

The widow of a man shot in a Florida movie theater in 2014 is suing the theater where the shooting took place and one of its employees. She is seeking $15,000 in damages related to physical, economic and psychological damage after the incident, which started over the use of a cellphone. The suit claims that Cobb Theaters and an employee at the Wesley Chapel location failed to uphold its gun ban at the time of the incident.

Senator demands action after deaths linked to keyless ignition

The death of a Florida woman from carbon monoxide poisoning is one of several that has prompted a U.S. senator to demand that keyless ignition systems in automobiles be made safer. The Florida death was one of six in 2015 that happened when cars with keyless ignition systems were left running.

Family settles lawsuit against Florida paramedics

The survivors of a woman who died after paramedics failed to take her to the hospital settled a lawsuit on Dec. 10 that they had filed against Palm Beach County The woman, aged 35, had been previously diagnosed with pneumonia and had a 102-degree fever. Her family stated that the paramedics were again called the next day and she was transported to the hospital but she later died.

Paul Walker's father sues Porsche

Florida residents who were fans of the late 'Fast & Furious" star Paul Walker may be interested to learn that Walker's father has filed a wrongful death claim. Walker's father sued Porsche for the fatal car accident that killed his son in 2013. According to the claim, the Porsche Carrera GT that Walker was riding in when he died lacked safety features that would have prevented his death.

Daughter of late rapper MC Supreme files wrongful death suit

Florida music fans may be interested to learn that the daughter of late rapper MC Supreme has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver who struck and killed him. The 47-year-old, who was best known for the hit "Black in America," died on June 15 in Malibu, California.

Family of deceased man sues "ZombiCon" for $5 million

On Nov. 3, the family of a man who was shot at a Florida event known as "ZombiCon" reportedly filed a $5 million wrongful death claim against the group that organized the event and an associated security company. The lawsuit claimed that the security was not adequate to handle the 20,000 attendees at the event.

Family of dead El Faro seaman sues ship operator for damages

When Category 4 hurricane Joaquin overtook the El Faro ship between Florida and Puerto Rico, 33 crew members lost their lives. Now, the family of one of the deceased seamen has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the ship's operators in a Jacksonville court.

Newtown wrongful death case sent back to state court

Florida residents may be interested to hear that on Sept. 30, a wrongful death lawsuit against gun maker Remington was sent back to a Connecticut state court. The ruling is said to be a victory for the families of the Newtown shooting victims who were pursuing the suit. This is because federal courts have typically refused to hold gun manufactures liable for crimes committed by third parties or permit lawsuits against them.

Porsche sued over Paul Walker's death

Florida movie fans that the daughter of the late actor Paul Walker is now suing Porsche over his death in 2013. She has filed a wrongful death claim against the automaker, claiming that the Carrera GT was designed with several flaws and defects that contributed to the fatal accident that claimed the lives of Walker and a friend who was driving. Her lawyer claims that the vehicle is dangerous and should be prohibited from U.S. roadways.

Lawsuit against Florida university over hazing death is settled

Given the nature of some hazing practices, it's not surprising that this ritual could lead to a wrongful death incident. Such was the case when a drum major at Florida A&M died after being beaten by fellow band members as part of an initiation. This man's family filed a lawsuit seeking compensation and the university chose to settle for a total of $1.1 million.
